Dealing with Birth Trauma Recvoery
Following a miscarriage, the body experiences its own form of grief. Depending on how far along the pregnancy was, physical changes may persist, leaving the body looking pregnant even though it isn’t. This experience – living in a body that no longer carries a pregnancy, while still longing for it, and perhaps even physically appearing pregnant – is a complex and often overlooked aspect of pregnancy loss. It’s a layer of grief that’s often missed in general conversations about miscarriage.
With the trauma of the actual miscarriage I dissolved into a pit of depression… unable to sleep or when I did sleep having nightmares… I went to see my GP who suspected PTSD.
How I can help
Experiencing a miscarriage can be deeply traumatic, leaving emotional scars that may impact your well-being. Many women find themselves grappling with a range of difficult emotions, including sadness, anger, guilt, and anxiety. It’s not uncommon for these feelings to escalate into PTSD.
If you’re struggling after a miscarriage, know that you’re not alone. At Thrive Therapy Aberdeen, I offer a safe and supportive space to process your grief and trauma. Through person-centred counselling, we can work together to:
- Acknowledge and validate your experience: Your feelings are real and deserve to be acknowledged. We’ll create a space where you can express your emotions without judgment.
- Process the trauma: We’ll gently explore the impact of the miscarriage on your mental and emotional health, helping you make sense of your experience.
- Develop coping mechanisms: I’ll help you identify healthy ways to cope with grief, anxiety, and other challenging emotions.
- Address any feelings of guilt or shame: Miscarriage can often trigger feelings of self-blame. We’ll work through these emotions, helping you find self-compassion and understanding.
- Rebuild your sense of hope: It’s important to remember that healing is possible. Together, we’ll work towards restoring your sense of hope and finding a path forward.
Globally, about 12-15 percent of recognised pregnancies end in miscarriage. Studies suggest that after a miscarriage 30 – 50% of women experience anxiety and 10 – 15 % experience depression, typically lasting up to four months.
