The benefits of Pregnancy and Perinatal support I offer in Aberdeen

Pregnancy is a transformative journey, filled with joy and anticipation, but it can also bring a wave of emotional and mental challenges. Thrive Therapy Aberdeen offers dedicated pregnancy support therapy, providing a safe and nurturing space to explore these complexities.

Whether you’re experiencing anxiety about childbirth, struggling with mood swings, or simply feeling overwhelmed by the changes in your life, I’m here to support you.

In addition to supporting all individuals navigating perinatal experiences, I also offer a safe, affirming space for LGBTQ+ parents and families, recognising and respecting the unique journeys to parenthood.

How I can support you

Our sessions focus on creating a supportive environment where you can openly discuss your fears, concerns, and hopes. We’ll work together to develop coping strategies, manage stress, and build resilience. Person-centred therapy allows us to focus on your unique experience, validating your feelings and empowering you to navigate this significant life transition.

Although expectant parents attend pre-natal counselling for all sorts of reasons, here are some things that may be addressed or supported during counselling.

Physical preparedness.

To understand how and when to stop birth control, proper nutrition in preparation for baby, risks associated with pre-existing health conditions and weight are a few considerations to be discussed.  This is the opportunity for you to also learn about methods to maximise fertility including timing and frequency of intercourse, especially if there have been past struggles with infertility.

Stress and expectations:

Counselling can help you sift through all the information on how to do parenthood, and put in perspective any images you may have of the perfect parent.  A woman and her partner need to understand there is no perfect way to parent. This is a good time to assess parenting styles so both parties can get a feel for how their child should be disciplined if there are differing views on childcare and more.

Anxiety and Depression :

For some women the normal worries and ups and downs of pregnancy can result in prenatal anxiety or depression that may be a predictor of post partum depression.  Counselling provides a means for screening for mental health concerns early on, and helping a woman to learn coping strategies and lifestyle changes that can make a big difference.  Although every prenatal plan looks a bit different it may include educating partners about what is normal and what is concerning in regards to mental health, and guidance on helpful ways to support ones significant other during the journey.

Individuals, couples and families known to have an increased risk of having a child with a birth defect or genetic condition may choose prenatal counselling to learn more about the condition.

Counselling is also appropriate for families who do not have this risk exploring prenatal screening and testing options such as blood tests and ultrasounds.

Financial readiness:

Are you and your partner ready for the extra expenses of nappies, baby food and early years child care?  Through counselling you can get support working through financial decisions so there are no surprises when baby comes.

It is very rewarding to see parents uncertainties fade as they realise they can do this motherhood thing.
