Couples therapy session discussing relationship challenges with a counsellor

Couples counselling in Aberdeen

Every relationship goes through rough patches – communication that’s stopped working, an argument that keeps resurfacing, or a quiet distance that’s crept in over time. Couples counselling gives you and your partner a calm, confidential space to work through it together, with someone trained to help you actually hear each other.

I work with couples in Aberdeen at every stage – some in crisis, many simply wanting to strengthen a relationship that’s already good. There’s no threshold of “bad enough” you need to reach before it’s worth coming in.

What we work on together

  • Communicating without talking past each other
  • Understanding what’s really driving recurring arguments
  • Rebuilding trust after a breach or betrayal
  • Navigating big transitions – a house move, a new baby, a career change
  • Reconnecting emotionally when life has pulled you apart

A few common myths

  • “It means we’ve failed.” Coming in together is usually a sign of commitment, not the opposite.
  • “The counsellor will take sides.” My role is to stay neutral and help both of you feel heard — not to referee or assign blame.
  • “We’re not bad enough for this.” Most couples I see aren’t in crisis — they’ve just noticed something’s off and want to deal with it early.

What a session looks like

We start by talking through what’s brought you in and what you’d both like to get out of it. From there, sessions are led by what’s most present for you that week — there’s no fixed script. I’ll help you slow down, listen properly, and find your way back to each other, at a pace that works for both of you.

Is it time to get in touch?

You don’t need a specific “reason” to book – but it’s often worth reaching out if:

  • Conversations keep turning into the same argument
  • You’re feeling more like housemates than partners
  • Something has broken trust and you’re not sure how to move past it
  • A big life change is putting pressure on the relationship

Taking the first step

Booking that first session can feel like the hardest part – most couples tell me it’s a relief once they’re actually in the room. If you and your partner are ready to work on things together, I’d be glad to help.
